How planning and controlling process of a construction project is affected when a reasonable amount of sub contract work is involved?

There is a mutual relationship between the subcontractors and the main contractors. The quality of the work subcontractors deliver affects the performance of the main contractor’s works.

When project need additional resources to carry out the work in a project; project manager should have a better knowledge about how to handle the subcontractors in an efficiency way. When we consider about the programme below there is a large amount of subcontracting work involvement. As per the below programme, from the beginning of excavation process we can see the involvement of the subcontractors. If we not planning properly to handle the subcontractors in most efficient way, after executing the project it may have negative impact on the project. Such as cost overrun, labour idling, delay in project, quality issues, wastage of materials etc.

As shown in the above programme if the delivery of mechanical equipment is delayed then the whole process of installation work will be delayed. It will affect to the time and the cost of the project. Hence as a project manager, he should have overall knowledge about how to manage subcontractors in related to time, cost and quality.
